Gras-drüber-wachsen-lassen, 2016, Inkjet print, framed, 24 x 16 cm
During a visit to the NS-Dokumentationszentrum in Munich in 2015, I encountered the concept of Gras-drüber-wachsen-lassen—“let the grass grow over.” This post-war movement in Germany sought to reclaim and transform sites once associated with the Third Reich, such as the Königsplatz, where I later captured this photograph. Once paved in tiles and used as a rally ground for the Nazi Party, the square was turned into a parking lot after the war, until 1988, when the tiles were removed, and grass was planted as a symbolic act of renewal and re-naturalization.
